OVERVIEW

The Star Labelling Program an initiative launched by the Ministry of Power is to provide the consumer an informed choice about energy saving and the cost benefits a@ached with it. Under this initiative the govt wanted to give an engaging and easy experience to the users by using a mobile app.

The Problem Statement

BEE Star label program has been in India since 2006 when it was first launched. Lot of the consumers are aware of the Star ratings on high power consumption devices but are unaware of the various underlying details of the same. The BEE department already has a website which has all these details but the consumers are not aware of the same. To build consumer awareness of the program and the finer details the dept wanted to build a easy to use mobile app where the consumers can get quick access to product level data before they buy them.

THE CHALLENGE

Defining Requirements

Since BEE was the first few departments globally to launch such an initiative it was difficult to determine the accurate project requirements and the potential features which would delight the users and keep them engaged in the app.

UX and UI

BEE wanted to have the best UI which would make the customers feel good about using a govt dept app. Generally govt apps are not very fancy but being a consumer app we took the multi color approach to give it that fun element.

THE SOLUTION

Testing the Designs first

We preferred to do the UX of the app first and get it proof tested with the users, basis which the UI was then presented to the government.

CMS Panel

A CMS was designed where the govt could manage all the product categories, the users, their comments / feedback and also the cost savings calculations. All they needed to do tomorrow was to change the calculation on the go and the same gets reflected in the app.

The Architecture

BEE had some 19 categories of products and each product had its own data set and cost savings calculation. We had to take an approach which was scalable so that more future products could get added with ease.

Scalable Architecture

The backend and app architecture was designed in such a manner that in future any product format changes the same gets reflected real time in the app without the need to update it. Any new product can be added from the CMS and the same gets reflected in the app

Native App Development

Being a G2C app the focus was on the experience of the app, therefore native app development approach was taken as both the iOS and Android were to be developed. Also this was done because the idea was to reach the masses and in India many of the phones are in the lower segment which have lower processing power. Cross platform development would have not been able to give that experience.

THE RESULT

  • The App has got a overwhelming response from the Govt as well as from the consumers. More than 25000 downloads have happened in less than a quarter which was never expected from a information based app.
  • Now the consumers can quickly compare products and their cost savings with a few clicks. They can even see the savings over a time period of 1 to 10 yrs. They can even filter the products based on their preferences.
  • The app allows the consumer to compare upto 4 products in the mobile app. The design was a challenge but the keen elements for decision making are shown in the app. The user can maintain as many comparisons as they feel like.
  • The app has a very easy to use interface which allows for easy navigation and access to data. In 3 steps the user can get access to the key data they are looking for. Ample use of white color and open spaces has been done to give a clean look.
